This may sound a little aggressive but successful leaders and small business owners act with courage. You must have difficult conversations with your employees. Don’t avoid it. In my experience, employee complaints about their boss being weak is an inability to make tough decisions. Make the tough decisions in order to build a strong team and company.

Don’t be Weak. Act with Courage

Face Tough Decisions Head on

Your employees want you to engage with them. You need to problem solve with your employees. Every small business has to deal with tough decisions. As a small business owner, you need to face these decisions head on. Whenever you are dealing with a tough decision, I would encourage you to do a quick huddle with your team if time permits. Asks for feedback on the best way to solve the problem. You need to work with your team to come up with a course of action that can potentially solve the issue. Then you need to make a decision. Don’t avoid making hard decisions. That is why you are the small business owner.

Act with Courage

Most people avoid making tough decisions, but most people aren’t small business owners.  You have a ton of responsibility on your shoulders as the business owner.  You have to figure out the correct balance regarding tough decisions.  If you have an employee that needs to be fired, you must make that hard decision and let them go.  I’m all for second chances, mentoring, and coaching employees.  In fact, I would encourage you to implement that across your business but if you have exhausted all of those efforts and you still don’t see improvement from a poor performing employee, then you need to let them go.  The rest of your employees will be grateful for the tough decision.
